Behavior Support Planning

Behavior support planning brings together what we know about a person, their values, and the function of their behavior into a clear, practical document. A good plan is teachable, respectful, and realistic for the people who will be using it every day. It tells staff and families what to do, when to do it, and why it matters.

We work in partnership with the person, those closest to them, and the wider team to design support that fits everyday routines. Plans are written in accessible language, aligned with rights-based and positive behavior support frameworks, and focused on improving quality of life rather than simply reducing incidents.

Behavior support planning

When is behavior support planning helpful?

Planning is most effective when it is proactive, collaborative, and grounded in a shared understanding of behavior.
  • Behavior is affecting safety, learning, or community access
  • Different staff or settings are using mixed strategies
  • Families and services want a single, consistent approach
  • Existing plans are out of date or hard to follow
  • New staff teams need clear guidance from the outset
  • Services are required to meet specific policy or regulatory standards
  • Teams want to focus on building skills, not just managing incidents

How we develop plans

We tailor the level of involvement to each situation… from brief consultation to full co-produced plans following detailed assessment.

  • Initial meeting to clarify priorities, timelines, and who should be involved
  • Review of assessment information, current plans, and relevant reports
  • Collaborative sessions to agree proactive strategies and responses
  • Drafting of a clear, teachable behavior support plan
  • Feedback and refinement with the person, family, and staff team
  • Optional support with training, implementation, and review cycles

An assessment helps us understand why behavior is happening. The behavior support plan turns that understanding into everyday action. It gives staff and families a practical guide so that responses are consistent, coordinated, and supportive of safety, learning, and quality of life.
